The TUM Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence is bringing experts from all over the world to Munich to talk about ethics and governance of AI with the IEAI Speaker Series. These events serve as an important platform for sharing new research and exchanging knowledge.

The April session of the TUM IEAI Speaker Series will take place on 3 April 2020, 11am, in room H.001 at Hochschule für Politik, Richard Wagner Straße 1, Munich. Our speaker, Joaquin Candela, will talk about Approaches to Problems of Fairness in AI Systems at Facebook.

Joaquin Candela is the Director of Engineering at Facebook. He and his team drives product innovation through applied research in computer vision, speech recognition, language understanding, personalization and recommendations, as well as production-grade AI platforms.

Before joining Facebook, Joaquin taught in the Engineering Department at University of Cambridge and worked at Microsoft Research in Cambridge, UK between 2007 and 2012. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute in Berlin and at the Technical University of Berlin with Klaus-Robert Müller, as well as a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen in Southern Germany. He received his PhD from the Technical University of Denmark in 2004, where he worked in the Intelligent Signal Processing group.
