With its Speaker Series, the TUM Institute for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence is bringing experts from all over the world to Munich to talk about ethics and governance of AI. These events serve as an important platform for sharing new research and exchanging knowledge.

The February session of the TUM IEAI Speaker Series will take place on 19 February 2020, 10am, in room H.001 at Hochschule für Politik, Richard Wagner Straße 1, Munich. The topic for this session is Autonomous Vehicles, Safety and AI.

We are pleased to announce that the speaker for this session is Rolf Johansson, Safety expert at AID – Autonomous Intelligent Driving GmbH. AID is a Munich-based company whose goal it is to create the universal autonomous driving system that improves the lives of millions of people.

Dr. Rolf Johansson has been with Autonomous Intelligent Driving (AID) as a safety specialist since the summer of 2019 . He has been working for more than 30 years in the area of critical embedded systems, 10 years in aerospace and more than 20 years in automotive. Dr. Johansson has a Master degree in Engineering Physics form Lund University and a Doctoral degree in Computer Engineering from Chalmers university, both in Sweden. During his entire professional career he has been trying to bridge the gap between industry and academia. He has also been involved in several standardization efforts, and is currently an appointed international expert in the ISO working group for functional safety for road vehicles. He has been active in the area of arguing safety for automated driving since 2013 and has published more than 10 peer-reviewed papers in the area. In the intersection between ethics, safety and self-driving he has a publication from 2016: Disarming the Trolley Problem – Why Self-driving Cars do not Need to Choose Whom to Kill.
